A Swedish Hidden Jewel: The First Modern Edition of Mankell's 5th Organ Sonata
Thanks to the Johannes Johansson's Bursary for Church Musicians which I have been awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2022, I have had the possibility to complete a project on the 5th Organ Sonata by the Swedish romantic composer Gustaf Mankell (1812-1880). Mankell worked as an organist for 45 years at St. James's Church in Stockholm and composed a lot of organ music of which only a small amount is published today. He is considered among the most important Swedish organists active in Sweden during the second half of the 19th century. My project consisted of two parts: publishing the first modern printed edition according to the manuscript kept at the Music and Theatre Library in Stockholm, and recording the whole sonata at five different Swedish historical organs, one movement per instrument. A few weeks after the music edition was published by Campano Edizioni in Pisa, Italy, I visited some historical organs in central Sweden to chose the five most suitable instruments to record this music according to the composer's own registration indications.
